Custom solid oak stair riser — Stepolia

Risers are often overlooked at initial quoting, yet they determine the final look of a staircase. A poorly sized riser, or one in a different species, immediately breaks visual cohesion. At Stepolia, we manufacture your risers alongside your treads, from the exact same batch of boards, to guarantee perfect grain and tone alignment.

Two materials are available. Solid edge-glued oak is our reference — same stability, same finish as your treads, suited to premium staircases. White acrylic MDF is a modern, cost-effective, perfectly smooth alternative, widely used in contemporary projects where the wood tread contrasts with a crisp white riser.

Our standard thickness is 15 mm, but we also machine thicker risers (18–22 mm) for specific projects. Dimensions are calculated precisely to your drawings — for cladding an existing staircase, we account for real gaps between treads, which may vary by a few millimetres from step to step.

Our craftsmanship

Our process

Solid oak risers are manufactured with the same edge-glued laminate process as our treads, guaranteeing identical stability and perfect visual continuity. MDF risers are machined from moisture-resistant MDF panel, then laquered in pure white acrylic on both faces and edges, for a smooth matte result.

Each riser is cut to the exact dimensions taken from your staircase, with ±0.5 mm tolerance. For cladding, we request a dimensioned drawing or photo with a tape measure, and we adjust every piece to on-site irregularities.

Riser pricing

From €28 ex VAT per solid-oak riser 180 × 900 mm × 15 mm. White MDF is about 40% less. Final price depends on dimensions, species and quantity — request your personalised quote.

Frequently asked questions

Solid oak or white MDF — which should I choose?
Solid oak remains the reference for a warm, cohesive staircase, especially if your treads are oak. White acrylic MDF suits a contemporary style, or when you want to lighten a dark staircase visually. Price-wise MDF is about 40% cheaper per square metre.
Does white MDF hold up over time?
Yes — we use moisture-resistant MDF with an acrylic lacquered finish on both faces and edges. Cleans with a damp sponge, handles impacts and ambient humidity. For very high-traffic staircases, solid oak remains more durable.
What thickness for a riser?
Our standard is 15 mm — the optimum in terms of look and cost. For a heavy staircase or a "shadow-gap" style where the riser overshoots the tread slightly, we offer 18 or 22 mm.
Will the tones match my treads?
Yes, if you order treads and risers together we produce them from the same board batch with the same finish. Natural oak grain variations remain (it is solid wood, not laminate), but overall tone is homogeneous.
Lead times and delivery?
Manufacturing 3 to 4 weeks, palletised Europe delivery with individual protection. We recommend ordering treads and risers together to guarantee perfect tone match.
