Custom solid oak stair tread — Stepolia

Stepolia stair treads are made one by one in our workshop, from solid European or American hardwood, to your exact dimensions. Each tread is built with edge-glued laminates: thin solid-wood strips bonded perpendicular to the visible face. This process prevents warping, cracking and bowing over time — unlike a tread cut from a single board.

Our treads fit every project: classic straight staircase, quarter or half-turn with L-shape winders, floating staircase suspended on embedded steel plates, or treads with LED lighting recessed into the nosing. For each use case we adjust thickness, chamfers, metal-insertion grooves and technical drillings directly on CNC — so installation is trim-free on site.

Four species are available: European oak (the most sought-after for its nobility and stability), ash (light, lively), beech (blond, uniform, value-oriented) and American walnut (dark, luxury grade). All our treads are kiln-dried to 8–11% moisture, guaranteeing they will not move once installed in heated interiors.

Why our treads

Each tread combines selected hardwood, crack-proof assembly and CNC machining accurate to a tenth of a millimetre.

Kiln-dried wood at 8 to 11% moisture
Compatible with metal, wood, concrete, floating
Straight, L-shape, winder — to your plan
CNC machining: metal grooves, cut-outs, LED drillings

Which staircase types

Our treads fit new builds as well as renovations. Send us your drawings or a photo, we quote in 24 h.

Metal staircase

Treads fitted on central or double steel stringers. Insertion groove or mounting plate machined to the tenth.

Floating (cantilever) staircase

Treads suspended on embedded steel plates. Drillings, notches and CNC pockets integrated in the workshop.

Concrete or wood staircase (renovation)

Solid treads 30 to 60 mm to replace or clad an existing staircase without heavy works.

Winders and L-shape treads

Complex shapes, quarter-turn or half-turn, cut to your plan by CNC.

Our craftsmanship

How we manufacture your treads

Each tread starts with a selection of Prime-grade solid strips, hand-sorted, then planed. Strips are edge-glued with D4 polyurethane adhesive (water-resistant) under a hydraulic press. The blank is then sanded 120 / 150, and runs through a 5-axis CNC for every project-specific cut: metal-insertion grooves, LED drillings, chamfers, rounded nosings.

Before shipping, every piece passes a moisture / flatness / dimension check. Our treads are individually packaged with reinforced corners and palletised for secure Europe-wide transport. A dimensioned technical drawing ships with every order to guarantee a seamless install.

How much does a custom tread cost?

Price depends on species, dimensions, thickness and finish. Use our 3D configurator for an instant estimate, or request a personalised quote with technical drawings.

Frequently asked questions

What thickness should I choose for a stair tread?
For a classic load-bearing staircase, 40 mm is standard in solid oak. For a suspended floating staircase, we recommend 60 to 80 mm to avoid any flex. For cladding an existing staircase, 20 to 30 mm is enough. We advise based on your structure — send us a front and side photo.
Can you make treads for a floating staircase?
Yes, it is one of our specialties. We CNC-machine steel fixing plates directly into the tread. Result: the plate is invisible once fitted, with zero play. Supply the technical drawing or the metal counter-parts and we adjust to the tenth of a millimetre.
Do your treads fit metal staircases?
Yes. We machine a groove on the underside so the tread locks onto the steel stringer. This prevents any movement and delivers a very clean finish. Works with central stringer, twin stringer, or treads on saddle brackets.
Can you integrate LED lighting into the tread?
Yes, we groove the nosing or underside to house a 24 V LED strip. The groove is calibrated to the strip you supply or we can recommend one. Wiring remains your electrician's job.
What are the lead times and delivery zone?
Manufacturing time: 3 to 5 weeks depending on workshop load. Palletised secure delivery across continental Europe. Individual packaging with reinforced corners. A shipping tracker is provided.
Which finish: raw, oiled or tinted?
Raw (sanded 120/150) if you prefer to apply your own finish on site. Pre-oiled with hardwax-oil for a protected natural look, workshop-applied. Tinted + hardwax-oil for custom tones (dark oak, smoked walnut, etc.) with superior protection.
